Liam pulled up to Hemet’s home and slowed.

“Goddamn,” he whispered. “Talk about timing.”

Hemet walked along the sidewalk, obviously heading for church. Less clear was why she stomped along so irate. He wrote this off and parked across the street.

He sat there for a moment, waiting for Hemet to clear out. When she disappeared down the sidewalk, he opened the center console and pulled a pair of gloves. Slipping the gloves on, he grabbed his imaging unit from the passenger seat, placed it inside his sweatshirt pocket, and went for the door.

He crossed the street and eased onto Hemet’s property. He also made sure to avoid the dirt, lest he leave behind shoeprints. He headed down the driveway and scanned the side of the home. A rectangular window stood about one-third of the way down. That should be the bathroom.

He stopped and assessed the window. Reaching it from here would be problematic. He looked around for a booster but found nothing. Looking back, he spotted pipes protruding from the stucco. He could use those, as long as they didn’t break.

He lifted his left foot and tested the pipes’ rigidity. They felt solid. Maybe they would hold. He climbed up completely, and the pipes held true. Reassessing the window, he spotted the knocked-out corner of the screen. This was it. He removed the screen completely, dropped it to the ground, and grabbed onto the ledge. He jumped and slithered through, certain he would pull a muscle. He didn’t. He merely fell on the other side.

“Shit!” he hissed, dropping loudly onto the bathtub.

He froze and listened. Goddammit. If anyone were inside, they would’ve heard him. Thankfully, nothing stirred. With the tension passed, anger seeped in. Mia really couldn’t find a spare key?

He exited the bathroom and toured the home to orient himself. While walking, he noted the bedrooms, the closets, the living room, and the kitchen. Hemet’s computer was in the living room. He walked over and planted himself.

“Damn. This thing is archaic.”

Outdated computers were good and bad. Their security systems were easier to bypass, but they weren’t always compatible with newer programs. That meant his imaging device might not work. Time to find out.

He fired up the computer, pulled his imager from his sweatshirt pocket, and unraveled the connecting wire. After plugging in the unit, the program automatically started. This was evident in the unit’s green light. In roughly ten minutes, the red light would activate, signaling completion.

As the unit whirred, he stood and walked to the kitchen. There had to be a spare key somewhere. He pulled open a drawer and rifled through the miscellaneous items. Soon after, he stopped and smirked. A brown set of keys was inside—the pair clearly fitted for door locks.

He pulled the keys, walked to the entryway, and opened both doors. He then tested the keys, and they worked. Now he shook his head. Mia really couldn’t find these?

He pocketed the keys and walked back to the computer. The imager’s light had turned red. That was that.
